Unless you are looking at a classic Earth hand, with very few lines on it, you’ll notice that the palm is dotted with several subsidiary markings. Some of these are single lines, while others form shapes such as triangles, crosses or stars. It’s beyond my scope of to describe what each of these markings means in every position in the hand, but a few basic guidelines are given here. If necessary, use your initiative and intuition, combining your knowledge of the general significance of the marking with that of the part of the hand that’s affected. These random patterns can be interesting but they are not vital when you are first learning how to read palms because whatever it is that they signify will also appear elsewhere in the hand.
The Square
This is a protective marking, especially if it’s formed around a line (whether broken or not). A square helps to minimize any potential harm or danger to a person. If the square appears on a mount, it somewhat reduces the negative qualities of that mount. For instance, a square on the mount of Saturn gives protection against pessimism and morbidity. A square on the mount of Jupiter has special significance because it denotes a born teacher.
The Star
Although you might imagine that stars denote good fortune, they are generally believed to have unfavourable meanings, signifying shocks or upsets connected with the area of life ruled by their position on the palm. So, a star on the mount of Jupiter means a shock or a severe disappointment connected with ambition, while on the mount of Venus it means unhappiness through love. As usual, there is an exception to the rule — a star on the mount of Apollo signifies success in the arts.
The Cross
As its name suggests, a cross is not a good sign, yet, curiously, it’s one of the most common of all random markings. It’s sometimes formed from a stray line crossing one of the main lines of the hand, but it may also be independent of any other’ lines. A cross signifies an obstacle or defect that has to be surmounted. Therefore, a cross on the mount of Luna signifies problems connected with the imagination — perhaps the person often makes mountains out of molehills. The more strongly marked the cross, the greater its significance.
The Triangle
This has to be well marked to be worthy of any consideration, otherwise it should be completely ignored. It is an extremely favourable sign, indicating mental brilliance. A triangle on the mount of Mercury, therefore, signifies that the person is brilliant at communicating their ideas. If someone has a triangle on the mount of Venus, they are lucky in love.
The Grille
Sadly, we’ve now returned to the subject of unfavourable markings. The grille is formed by a network of horizontal and vertical lines which cross each other at right angles. The finer the lines that make up the grille, the less significant it, and its effects, will be. It symbolizes obstacles in life which have to be surmounted, and which relate to the area of life that is ruled by that part of the hand. Therefore, a grille on the mount of Saturn indicates a tendency towards melancholy and pessimism, which can blight the person‘s life.
